The music man is a swindler named Harold Hill, who goes from town to town selling the idea of forming a local boys' band. He says he is ready to train it if the town buys from him all the necessary equipment. However, since Hill cannot read a note of music and knows nothing about training a band, he absconds with the money as soon as he has made the sale. He comes to the town of River City, Iowa, where his easy spiel wins the townsfolk. But when their suspicions are momentarily aroused, he overcomes the incredulity of a committee sent to investigate his credentials by inducing them to form a barbershop quartet. The monebank, however, is foiled by two unforseen developments. He falls in love with the local librarian-piano teacher, Marian Paroo -- the only one who really knows he is a con man but is willing to ignore this unsavory fact because she loves him. The other development is the contagious spirit generated in the town for song and dance which even infects our charlatan. He has a change of heart and falls in line with the rest of the town. In the final scene the boys appear in full regalia with their instruments to sound the first sour notes of their band music.
